Decolonial Frequencies
IN CURATORIAL COLLABORATION WITH MELÊ YAMOMO
Familiar sounds and frightening noises. The fleeing melodic snatches of memory, favorite songs, the noise in the street where we live. We live in our sound world, it gives us orientation, feeling and energy. Subjective, intimate - and yet acoustic perception is historically the result of history, of colonial formation. What we understand as "music," as "beautiful," "harmonic," "contemporary," as "literature," "relevant," or "true" is the result of a history of valorizations and devaluations of sounds, practices, and bodies. In long frequencies, our hearing, understanding, sound-making have been shaped, but stubbornness produces frictions, waves of resistance, and echoes of solidarity. Can these grinding interferences, the clash of sounds be registered or produced? Can the change of hearing, understanding, appreciating be shaped?
Decolonial Frequencies is a series of events throughout the season 2021 / 22. More than 20 artists*, Black perspectives, queer approaches, Asian-diasporic settings, post-migrant traditions and voices of color, create their own acoustic spaces for six months with numerous performances, lectures and concerts - with critical amplitude, in dancing natural oscillation, in uncontrollable interference.
