Hilla Steinert

Hilla Steinert

Hilla Steinert is a dancer and performance artist. She began her dance career in 1978 in Nuremberg. In 1981 she began training in Austin, USA with Deborah Hay, whose work had a lasting impact on her own process. In 1986, after training as a movement and dance educator, she broadened her concept of dance and progressively turned to performance art. Between 1999 and 2004 she completed training as a dance therapist at FITT ‒ Frankfurter Institut für Tanztherapie. Since 1989 she has been working as a freelance artist.

She realizes numerous performances and art projects that are presented internationally, e.g. for La Muga Caula Festival (Spain), Teufelsberg (Berlin), Infecting the City and Gallery Commune 1 (Cape Town, South Africa), Platoon Kunsthalle (Berlin) and the 53rd Biennale (Venice). She is especially interested in the question of identity and the relationships people have with an ever-changing world. In 2015 Hilla Steinert developed a performance with Sifisio Seleme about the equality of people. The performance explores subliminal preconceptions about race, gender, age, religion and social status. It was performed on several occasions in public spaces at different venues in Berlin. In 2018 she collaborated with Jeremiah Day and Dunja Herzog on creating a performance for Kunstverein Göttingen that dealt with the effects and the historical background of colonial history on the basis of copper within the context of the exhibition Drift and Shift.
Since 2019, Hilla can be seen at Ballhaus Naunynstraße in the dance performance STRICKEN.

“If there’s something I deeply care about then it’s to help something grow. That applies to art as much as it does to life. One is inextricably linked to the other.”
