Wassim Mukdad

Wassim Mukdad

Wassim Mukdad is a musician and composer from Syria. He composes, conducts and plays the oud (Arabic lute) in multiple genres such as taarab, dance and medieval music, which he combines with elements of other music cultures.

Wassim has been playing the oud and the piano since his early childhood, strongly influenced by Munir Bashir, one of the greatest oud players in history. He enjoyed training at the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus under the supervision of renowned professors Askar Alikbarov (from Azerbaijan), Isam Rafee and Mohammad Othman (from Syria).

Currently Wassim is studying musicology at the Humboldt University in Berlin while being involved in various music projects such as the Babylon Orchestra. He is part of the Kayan Project and participating in projects such as Musikplus Fusion, the Berlin Philharmonic’s education programme.

All of his musical projects demonstrate his vision of music as one of the most important means of communication to connect people with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and to interact with them on a deep emotional level.
