An enemy of the people: The journey to survival

Documentary by Ibrahim Ghareib

Cairo 2013. The Muslim Brotherhood is still in power. Right in the middle of the post-revolutionary chaos, the independent theatre company La Musica starts working on a contemporary adaptation of Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People.
Despite the curfew, violent riots and changes of regime, a production is developed on the basis of Ibsen’s text about the pitfalls of democracy between majority rule and propaganda. The production is in a state of flux ‒ just like the political situation and the dynamics within the group.

The documentary filmmaker Ibrahim Ghareib accompanied the group for one whole year and reflected the process in conversation with the actor and director Nora Amin. The outcome is an intimate portrait of theatre as a tool for survival.
