Rest and joy are not equally granted to all bodies in our society; the need for joy and rest is not equally recognized for everyone. Even within Black communities, fat bodies and the bodies of people who are disabled are not given the same space – to exist, to be visible and to celebrate.

In this panel, Djamal Okoko, Kumi More, and Lahya Aukongo will discuss ways to shape intersectional celebration. Djamal Okoko is a product designer whose research focuses on the intersection of design and disability studies; Kumi More is a sex worker, author, and performer; and Lahya Aukongo contributes expertise as an artist and activist, among other things. Together, we explore how rest and joy, in other words spaces of celebration and recuperation, can be made accessible to every body. The panel will be moderated by Jul Kolberg, a political educator specializing in racism, disability, and queerness.

For the seventh edition of the festival Black Berlin Black, held under the theme Festivity, Fabienne Mahwane –  fully qualified lawyer, moderator, and speaker – has developed a series of conversations with numerous guests. This series explores the political implications of celebration: What is celebrated and what should be celebrated? Who is allowed to celebrate and who celebrates anyway? When is celebration happening and when should it happen? And how should we celebrate if we are striving for transformative justice?
