Into the Chronosphere

Theatre by Sisi Bo’wale

In German and English with German and English surtitles

How much time do we have left? Until all time is consumed? The Earth turns slowly as the universe expands in waves. Humanity is accelerating its own end. And I find myself asking: who does time belong to?

In Into the Chronosphere, Sisi Bo’wale and his team weave performance, video, sound and design into a tongue-in-cheek, queer, Afrofuturist collage.

Three siblings lead a group of visitors through the „Museum of Contemporary Chronology and World History“. They play the role of the perfect guides. Yet in truth they are searching for an object that belongs to them — something from their world at the beginning of time, once stolen and archived.

The colonial ambitions of the Empire have forced universal, unadulterated time into linear patterns, chopped it up and ordered it into controllable units. The pace of humanity accelerated as the Empire expanded its sphere of influence and its collections. Now, in the impenetrable labyrinth of the museum, the fates of the siblings collide with those of the visitors.

Time is not one thing. The tortoise knows this. To be time, time is required…

Into the Chronosphere is the logical continuation of Sisi Bo’wale’s own artistic endeavour: through poetry, collages, zines and films, he has spent several years deconstructing dominant notions of time and — drawing on Surrealist and Afrofuturist art forms — creating his own artistic worlds of time. And yet Into the Chronosphere is also a debut — Sisi Bo’wale’s directorial debut at Ballhaus Naunynstraße. The actor, filmmaker, visual artist and writer previously created his full-length solo performance Moonflavoured Mountains (2025) and served as facilitator for the production Weaving Dreams (2026) as part of the akademie der autodidakten.
