(in)VISIBLE is a dance project with young Black, PoC and (post)migrant people from the LGBTQI* community who have come together to exchange ideas and experiment with strategies of resistance. Psychologically and physically no one is exclusively masculine or feminine. We ask: How does the body react to being misgendered? Where does queerness/trans-ness/non-binariness show or hide in our bodies? What does it feel like to suddenly be able to decide what to show of ourselves in the spotlight?
Oppression doesn’t just add up: 1+1 ≠ 2. The experience of being LGBTQI* and at the same time racialized, othered, exoticised, undocumented, economically disadvantaged and marginalised creates experiences which are unique for each person. This diversity comes with power and potential. By opposing homophobic, trans*phobic, racist or hetero-sexist stereotyping and affirming our differences, reclaiming and defining them ourselves, we empower ourselves.
Moving together, inspiring each other and creating a culture of care is the purpose of (in)VISIBLE. These are vital ingredients for us, nurturing and empowering us. Bodies and souls communicate. We form a group of mutual support. Touch is a form of care for us and we ask for permission and are aware of our own and others’ boundaries. We reject misgendering. Using the power of dance, we create self-determined artistic forms of visibility and build bridges.
