The Seawall by Mason Richards and The Price of Memory by Karen Marks Mafundikwa

In the context of the festival Republik Repair, Karib Kino presents the short film The Seawall, directed by Mason Richards and filmed in Georgetown, Guyana. The Seawall provides a rare glimpse of everyday life of a Guyanese family and captures in breathtaking images how emigration impacts those that stayed.

The second film of the evening, The Price of Memory, is the result of a ten-year working process of the filmmaker Karen Marks Mafundikwa. During a visit to Jamaica, Queen Elisabeth II is called on by a group of Rastafarians to provide compensation for the years of enslavement. The film follows this petition, at the same time telling the stories of early Rastafarians who had already sought reparations in the 1960s. The film examines the legacy of enslavement in now independent Jamaica, the way Great Britain got rich on slavery, as well as the development of the compensation process.
