akademie der autodidakten
KOTTI IS BURNING starts out from our location, which in the past year has experienced a renaissance as the “most dangerous place in Germany” in the media. The area around the Kotti (Kottbusser Tor), which had calmed down in the past years due to increasing gentrification, is described as a place generating a brutalised society. Delinquency had risen to such an extent that Kottbusser Tor was threatening “to shift”. What remains obscure is exactly who or what is triggering the increasing violence.
With KOTTI IS BURNING, post-migrant youth from the context of akademie der autodidakten produce a critical reflection of the current situation at Kottbusser Tor, the way it is presented in the media, and the consequences for people’s coexistence in Kreuzberg. This involves taking a careful look at “postcolognialism” at Kotti as much as the effect this issue has on the new narrative of migration in Berlin.
