Konzert: Burcu Karadağ & Ensemble
Beyond Istanbul Vol. X
Burcu Karadağ is the only ney player in Turkey known across borders. For many years she has been performing in solo concerts, collaborating with artists from different musical genres, including the world-famous Turkish pianist Fazıl Say. In 2012 she founded her own ensemble with the goal of giving young generations an understanding of Sufi music. In the Sufis’ Islamic mysticism, the reed flute ney plays a central role. Burcu Karadağ is regarded as an exceptional musician within the male-dominated tradition of Sufi music which she interprets in a contemporary way by having a backing with classical instruments. Karadağ, who also teaches playing the ney and is concerned with the theoretical aspects of ney playing, is performing with her ensemble in Berlin for the first time. She is accompanied by Turkey’s most renowned cellist Murat Süngü, the young oud virtuoso Gürcan Yaman, and the percussionist Fıratcan Gülhan.
