ONE DAY I WENT TO *IDL is a theatre and music project involving refugees and post-migrant young adults in collaboration with the artists Theresa Henning and Adrian Figueroa as well as the British-Nigerian musician Afrikan Boy.
In his hit song One Day I went to Lidl, Afrikan Boy describes how a refugee immigrated to England, lived there without papers and didn’t even have enough money to buy a frozen chicken at Lidl. Caught “shoplifting” in various supermarkets, he is kicked out and gets barred. The song, a dry-witted artistic processing of a desperate situation, was recorded by Afrikan Boy without any money and without a label and then put on Youtube, where by now it has been accessed well over 2 million times.
The young protagonists come together on stage at Ballhaus, a DJ console and a large projection screen at their disposal. Here they can be inspired by the unrestrained energy of the song One day I went to Lidl. Using spoken word, performance, videos and live music they do not only present their self-created artistic approaches, but also their very own difficult or hopeful stories, views of the world, and their visions of the life they want to lead.
