Buna Hour / Arts of the Everyday is the fourth and final event in our series oftalks on strategies for decolonizing everyday life as part of the festival Postcolonial Poly Perspectives.

Everyday life is a constant buzzing, humming, drone. Familiar. It has evolved over time out of social routines, infrastructures and rhythms. Is art an intervention? How can artistic practices contribute to weaning us from everyday life? How can they familiarize us in new and unusual ways with what we already see, hear and embody?

Artists transform habits of perception and judgement. In doing so, they overcome established forms of documenting the everyday. By using traditional narrative forms, tools and media that have historically often been used in violent ways for their own purposes, they overcome them. What are their artistic techniques, which spaces do they open, how do they create moments of empowerment and healing?

In this last issue of Buna Hour, moderator Magnus Elias Rosengarten, artist and illustrator Moshtari Hilal, cultural scientist and pedagogue Aïcha Diallo and curator and writer Kathy-Ann Tan come together. Collectively they will discuss their practices of capturing, observing and redesigning everyday life. The conversations are inspired by the Ethiopian practice of buna, an everyday practice in which households and communities come together for one to two hours to discuss everyday matters. Previous editions have talked about food as a medium of decolonization, archives and archiving as decolonial practices, and finally intersectional and decolonial notions of justice. Now art as an intervening, reflecting, empowering and healing force will be the topic.
