SPLITTER

Soloperformance by Michail Fotopoulos

At night, foxes roam the city. Every muscle fibre in their body taut; between fleeing and hunting. Like cracks in the social order. The outside is right in the centre.

On stage we see Michail Fotopoulos, narrator, performer, protagonist. He roams this city that used to and may still be a promise and is now so ruthlessly hip. Night people, restless people, revenants cross his path ‒ encounters he recounts, that quicken the rhythm of his dance. The formerly divided city offers no limitations; its glass surfaces are only seemingly permeable. New demarcations have turned this city into a labyrinth, without a goal or exit for some, for him. Never belonging and still choosing to stay here ‒ is that endurable? And how do we endure it, the icy chill of being shut out?

Rembetiko, the “Greek blues” of those exiled in Greece in the 1920s, the outcasts and workers made precarious through industrialisation, is the basic motif of Michail Fotopoulos’ own narrative sound in Splitter. Markos Vamvakaris, whose songs have been meaningful to Michail Fotopoulos in a controversial way since he was a child, serves as his adversary so he can find his own narrative for present-day Berlin.

Splitter is Michail Fotopoulos’ debut. As an actor he has previously performed at Ballhaus Naunynstraße in Die Dunkelkammer by Kostis Kallivretakis and Bloody, Medium oder durch, directed by Anestis Azas. Now for the first time he will be writer and performer.
