STILL TOMORROW
BUSY BODIES – ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL BERLIN 2017
At age 39 Yu Xiuhua encounters the impossible: after uploading some of her poems online, she becomes China’s most famous living poet overnight. Full of existential longing and sexual desire, her work not only asks what it means to be a woman in China today; against the backdrop of Yu’s experience of growing up in the countryside, without high school diploma, and with a chronic disability, her poetry powerfully insists on the right to life, love, and self-determination. However, while Yu’s instant fame brings financial independence, familial bonds and social norms appear unchangeably fixed. In attentive, observational style, IDFA award-winner Still Tomorrow offers the intimate and moving portrait of an outstanding artist.
