WASL

Ein Konzert von Kamilya Jubran, Werner Hasler & Sarah Murcia

Wasl is Arabic and among other things stands for consolidation, assemblage, combination, connection, approximation, and affiliation. For Kamilya Jubran it means “reunion,” “coming full circle” ‒ on an artistic as well as a historic level. In earlier projects such as Makan (2009) and Wanabni (2010) she worked with writings and poems by Hassan Najmi, a poet and writer from Rabat, as well as Salman Masalha, a poet and writer from Jerusalem. For Kamilya Jubran, both poets represent the two parts of the Arab world, the Middle East and the Maghreb, the northern part of Africa. A world that is at the same time connected by a shared official language and divided by a complex geography and a history shaped by very different socio-political events and developments.

Three musicians who have known each other for more than ten years unite and also reunite in a poetic approach referring to two poets, one coming from Mashreq the other from Maghreb. An embrace of music and lyric.
