Wem gehört die Stadt?
Two documentaries take a look at Brazil before the World Cup
Beginning with the forced eviction of poor families from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro whose houses had to make way for boulevards and shops for the World Cup, the documentary À Caminho da Copa (On the Way to the World Cup) by Carolina Caffé and Florence Rodrigues deals with the social impact of mega events such as the World Cup or the Olympic Games.
The documentary A Cidade é para Todos: as jornadas de junho e o direito à cidade (The City Is For Everyone: The June Demonstrations and the Right to the City), realised by Instituto Pólis (directed by Amanda Kamanchek Lemos), addresses the massive Brazilian protest movement in 2013: the film describes new forms of civic involvement in Brazil, attempts to strengthen a democratic culture, the state of public services and new political strategies.
