WHEN A FARM GOES AFLAME
A film by Jide Tom Akinleminu, followed by a conversation
(in Danish, English, and Yoruba with English subtitles)
Completely unexpectedly, filmmaker Jide Tom Akinleminu learns of a second family his father secretly founded. What follows is a personal journey between Denmark and Nigeria, past and present, in search of uncovering a long-concealed lie and exploring the different realities of a deeply divided family. With When A Farm Goes Aflame, director Jide Tom Akinleminu attempts to bring together the stories and beliefs of all those involved, as they confront their shared past. With a sensitive narrative perspective and striking visual language, this documentary flows seamlessly between its protagonists, countries, and continents — a poetic and psychologically complex exploration of the clash between divergent cultural and personal concepts of love, relationships, and family.
Jide Tom Akinleminu is a Danish-Nigerian filmmaker and graduate of the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). Based in Berlin, he works across documentary, fiction and television film. His directorial debut, Portrait of a Lone Farmer, won several awards including the African Movie Academy Award and the 3Sat Prize. His follow-up film, When A Farm Goes Aflame, premiered at the Berlinale in 2021 and received the African Studies Association Film Prize in 2022.
Following films such as Blues for Mrs. by Anton Juan, How to Tell Gunshots from Fireworks by Philipp Groth and Tsellot Melesse and I Was Never Really Here by Gabriel B. Arrahnio, the film series BLACK EYES ON BLACK BODIES (2023), curated by Mona Okulla Obua, enters its next season with When A Farm Goes Aflame by Jide Tom Akinleminu.
