Rest and joy are forms of resistance — they can be. When do they unfold this political power? There is a long history of this form of resistance and an ongoing academic as well as activist discussion about it. Here, theater scholar and performer Nebou N’Diaye, education and gender studies scholar Prof. Dr. Maisha-Maureen, and author, translator, and activist Yezenia Léon Mezu come together to share their experiences from different contexts and, across generations, explore how we can and want to celebrate in a world where right-wing forces are gaining increasing support and power. Together, we reflect on how rest and joy are expressions of Black resistance, how they represent moments of healing, and what power can be unfolded through rest and joy. In doing so, we also focus on how different generations define and live out resistant celebration for themselves. The panel will be moderated by political educator and activist Jessica Massóchua.

For the seventh edition of the festival Black Berlin Black under the motto Festivity, Fabienne Mahwane — trained lawyer, moderator, and speaker — has conceived a discussion series with numerous guests. In it, they trace the political implications of celebration:

What is celebrated and what should be celebrated, who is allowed to celebrate and who celebrates nonetheless, when does one celebrate and when should one celebrate, and how should we celebrate if we are striving for transformative justice?

So that we may celebrate in resistance!
