Yolun Başında - Beginnings
A documentary by Somnur Vardar
A group of young people from Armenia and Turkey meet in two cities for a reconciliation project. Their first stop is the city of Mush in southeast Turkey where a major Armenian community lived before 1915. Exploring with the students the film opens up that the search for memory in Turkey about Armenians is a ‚void‘ act and established partly by denial and partly by the modern Turkish State’s identity construction. The second stop is in Gyumri, Armenia where the project continue in the villages close to Turkish border, where the grandchildren of those who were displaced from Mush live today. This time the major question occurs as “How do people remember Mush?” Apparently, the post-memory of Mush is strongly alive in the minds of the displaced society. Towards the end it is understood that the more the participants are side by side the more their multifaceted relationship appears. They question the notions of friendship and trust as well as the issues of the genocide, memory, history, denial and the demand for the truth.
The film depicts on how the issues of conflict and reconciliation are being discussed with passion, compassion, resentment, distrust or simply with pure youthful joy.
