Azeret Koua

Azeret Koua

Azeret Koua grew up as a third-culture kid in the USA, Germany and China. She initially studied law until she was seduced by theater. After dropping out of law school, she studied theater studies and art history at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. During this time, she directed, assisted and continually campaigned for inclusive thinking and acting in the theater. After her studies, she assisted at the Schauspiel Dortmund and the Residenztheater.
On stage, she passionately and humorously negotiates taboo points of friction in society and politics. She is particularly interested in previously overheard and misrepresented narratives and perspectives. Her staging work is strongly influenced by pop culture and music. As a director, she works with quotas in every production: at least one marginalized person on and off stage. She fundamentally excludes alibi functions and the instrumentalization of marginalized people/groups from her theater work. Respectful interaction at eye level with all participants is the fundamental basis for this.
At Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, Koua was part of Ganz Vorn (2023), a meeting of Black people in leadership positions.
She is part of the designated artistic direction and leading director at Theaterhaus Jena.
