Bishop Black is a British artist who has been performing initially in the medium of performance art, before shifting to drag and later burlesque. Their main expression comes from the use of body as language and a politicized tool, through sexuality and gender. Having worked within film for the last few years, they now work on stage, creating unique but connected performances that utilize mythology, occultism, queerness and dance. Throughout the work, the intention of creating mood through music and acting is an underlying current that seeks progression and growth in unlocking that which could be seen as ridiculous, stimulating and aiming to release the repression one feels in one’s own body. Bishop Black first appeared at Ballhaus Naunynstraße in 2017, in the performance Permanente Beunruhigung Vol. II. This work was revived the following year under the title Your Devices at the Internationalen Performance Festival Permanente Beunruhigung. Bishop presented their first solo performance Becoming My Body at the Ballhaus Naunynstraße in 2019. They worked as facilitator for the akademie der autodidakten’s production Re-Searching Joy (2022) and made their directorial debut with the performance Flight of the Canaries (2023). Bishop also took part in the panel discussion Die Macht der Bühne (2024) as part of the festival Black Berlin Black – United Polyphonic.
