Mona Okulla Obua is a German-Ugandan director, poet and editor. She graduated from Konrad Wolf Film University of Babelsberg in 2017. Topics of her work are diasporic identities, the decolonization of black bodies, nature, spirituality and afro-surrealism. She explores the medium film through an experimental lens, implementing poetry in images and words. With her film INDIGO, she puts Black women at the center – both in front of and behind the camera. This was also shown at Ballhaus Naunynstraße in 2023 and marked the beginning of a long-term collaboration: in the same year, she created the video for Magda Korsinsky’s production WERDEN (2023). She also developed the film series Black Eyes on Black Bodies for Ballhaus Naunynstraße, and was responsible for moderating the screenings of That Ugandan Flaming Homosexual and The Homes We Carry. She lives between Berlin and Kampala.
