Shelly Phillips
Shelly Phillips is an artist, composer, and performer whose interdisciplinary practice moves across sound, performance, acting, writing, and installation. Their work engages social relationships, structures of power, and collective perspectives.
Phillips received formal musical training in piano, drums and voice, and holds a B.A. in Songwriting/Composition from Popakademie Baden-Württemberg. They developed their approach to digital music production through a self-taught practice. Since 2023, Phillips has served as Artistic Director of Com Chor Berlin.
As a composer, Phillips has created works for theatre productions at Münchner Kammerspiele, JES Stuttgart, Junges Nationaltheater Mannheim, and Theater Chemnitz. Phillips has also realised sound works and installations, developed during a residency in Alte Feuerwache Mannheim, as well as a composition for the Academy of Theatre and Dance Amsterdam. Phillips composed the song Niemand außer dir for the Disney+ series Sam – Ein Sachse (Sam – A Saxon).
In 2024, Phillips was Artist in Residence at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, where the composition G(r)ain premiered. Alongside their compositional practice, Phillips works as an actor and has appeared in the film productions The Memory Guardians and Fallen. Phillips’ song Gute Zeiten received the 2025 German Songwriting Award in the category Best Immersive Mix.
At Ballhaus Naunynstraße, Phillips works as sound designer for the production Arrival of the Village (2026).
