Die Schwäne vom Schlachthof

By Hakan Savaş Mican

Die Schwäne vom Schlachthof goes in search of the lost memories of a past era, when the dividing lines and walls in Berlin and between its people were still made of concrete.

A whole generation of children who never experienced the Berlin Wall has now grown of age. Memories have faded and disappeared, like those of the generations who grew up in the shadow of the Wall. In Die Schwäne vom Schlachthof, Hakan Savaş Mican takes a look back at these stories from a post-migrant perspective, like that of the two boys who drowned in the River Spree in 1966 and 1975. (Der Tagesspiegel)

… Mican, who penned the play himself, developed the story from interviews with four real people, interweaves these with the memories of the drowned children like surreal dreams. Exciting, sad and somewhat crazy, he reflects German/Turkish and German/German clichés straight back at us with uncanny precision. (Michaela Schlagenwerth, Berliner Zeitung)
