INDIGO

By Mona Okulla Obua

Indigo, the color of the diaspora, of a diasporic life – where old connections are sought and new intertwinements are formed.

Mona Okulla Obua’s short film follows two Afro-German women, showcasing their distinct perspectives on Black identities. The narrative threads that ultimately weave together in a hair braiding ritual are diverse: Within this shared act and the transmission of ancestral knowledge lies healing.

With its open narrative structure, partly rooted in poetry, INDIGO embarks on an Afro-surrealist, poetic-visual journey. The film positions itself as a dialogue between diaspora and continent, tradition and the present age, past and future – with the ethereal beauty of Black hair at its core.

Mona Okulla Obua, who studied at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf, views INDIGO more as a statement than a story: To be Black and German is concrete, real. In shaping this reality, her decision to fill all significant roles in the film crew with Black individuals, filmmakers of color, mothers, and those identifying as female is a contributing factor.

The screening will be followed by an audience discussion with the director.
