NEW GROWTH

by Nasheeka Nedsreal

A new message! An interview, casting, first date, second date! How will I wear my hair? How much time do I have? Relax? For whom, who should relax? Inhale, exhale, look in the mirror, take stock. Anticipation?

Culture and monitoring. Appearance matters, women’s hair, black women’s hair. With New Growth, dancer and performer Nasheeka Nedsreal brings the multi-stranded, multi-knotted mesh of power to the stage. A variety of cultural and political struggles, a contradictory interweaving of beauty ideals and racist perceptions, of envy, fear, pride, of fashion and inherited techniques, of industrial standardization and political coding, of self-images, labelling, of fantasies and independent growth get entangled in the hair on our heads. Can this mesh be detangled?

Since childhood, our hair is dealt with – confronting us with expectations as to who we are and who we should be. It is an intimate learning of norms and codes. It is permeated by power and violence. The person that touches your hair has power. Who is it? Is it you? Does empowerment also mean styling? But how? Let it fro!

New Growth is the first solo performance by dancer and performer Nasheeka Nedsreal at Ballhaus Naunynstraße.

press reviews:

„In this light and short performance (it takes a while before the audience realises it’s over and starts clapping), Nedsreal unravels the complexity of the topic with fierceness and joy.“ (tanzschreiber, october 2020)
