Improvising with intangible things … approached through the tangible: such as food, clothing, objects and my body. Both are necessary in creating environments suitable for us.

Pepe Dayaw makes his debut. A portrait. He grew up with a gendered uniform mandate at school, with catholic dogmatism, in a nationalist post-colonialism.  Step through. We grow up in society – but how can one grow in a society that was once sold off by colonial powers? Identities develop through cultural imprints, suggestions and influences. How can one develop one’s ego when the culture is saturated with propagandistic artefacts? What is good and what is bad, what is beautiful and what is ugly – has always been determined by Catholicism, colonialists and commerce. Step through. Step through it until the body flows smoothly, like a dance and one’s own movements liquefy, queer the environment and cause relationships to vibrate. So here, in his portrait performance, Pepe Dayaw showcases his art.

With the series PORTRAIT, in which artists introduce themselves and their work, Ballhaus Naunynstraße has disrupted its usual production method. PORTRAIT provides artists with the space to showcase themselves, their own skills and artforms, yes that, what is truly important. PORTRAIT is thereby an invitation to the public, to meet fascinating artists and experience the complexities of their work.
