STAIRCASE OF MEMORY
BY SAGAL FARAH AND LERATO SHADI
We have a common ground! Too often, we assume that we agree on certain fundamentals. We haven’t all done the same work in terms of decolonization or unlearning or learning. Our perspectives vary. But perhaps we can walk a common path.
The staircase is a practical thing, it connects the basement to the attic, it allows us to access different levels. At the Ballhaus Naunynstraße, it connects rehearsal rooms and technical storage, performance spaces with toilets and the bar. It winds from the ground to the sky. It allows us to cover a distance in a wide spiral – and in an impressive way, we experience that with it, the perspective changes, from the frog’s-eye view to the bird’s-eye view and back. The staircase makes it tangible that our perspective – and thus ourselves – change as we walk.
For ten years, Black perspectives have shaped the program at the Ballhaus Naunynstraße. It has accompanied numerous protagonists on their journey and set its own impulses. Thus, it is itself part of a Black history in Germany. Against this backdrop, the two visual artists Sagal Farah and Lerato Shadi were asked to perform the central organ of the Ballhaus Naunynstraße, from which everything intertwines, this tree staircase between workshop and art, between rehearsal and public, between yesterday and tomorrow – with a cooperation that transcends levels and floors!
Open on all performance days, one hour before the start of the event.
