Junctions

Branch-off or junction? Many paths bring us together. Just as many lead us apart. What connects us? Six Black dancers meet in Nasheeka Nedsreal’s choreography.

Being Black connects – the violence of a white dominant society exposes us to the same pressure, the same danger. We are one. One story shapes us: We matter! And yet we have numerous stories. Berlin is the junction. This is where we met. Where we were born or immigrated to. “Afro” as a prefix connects us, while the diversity of backgrounds, genders, experiences, preferences and needs make up our wealth. And our differences. The differences are working in us, in our bodies, in the group. The connections need to be strong. New connections must be formed, adjusted and compacted. Dance is a common element.

Dance is our language. But our styles are as diverse as our stories. Patterns and expressions are not easily translated. And yet: Dance is our practice, in which we liquefy our differences and boundaries. It is the medium in which we liquefy ourselves. In which our bodies meet. In which we meet. In which we connect to shape a new strength!

With Junctions Nasheeka Nedsreal and her ensemble trace the political power of dance. Based on a reflection of othermothering and care, they test the energetic, protective, connective qualities of the medium. Here, dance becomes an autonomous sphere, in which various differences are related, in which connecting factors are shaped and strengthened. Because junctions, stable connections are formative. Through them futures can be shaped.

After numerous collaborations as a dancer and her multiple rerun solo New Growth, Nasheeka Nedreal makes her debut as a choreographer at Ballhaus Naunynstraße with Junctions.
