POLYPHONIC. INSIDE THE COLOR OF SOUL.

TRANSDISCIPLINARY MUSIC JAM BY JEAN-PAUL BOURELLY & GUESTS

On two evenings, an interdisciplinary gathering in the form of a town hall meeting/talk/ jam session will take place at the Ballhaus Naunynstraße.

African-American composer and musician Jean-Paul Bourelly is the host of this extraordinary gathering,  which brings together diverse musicians and intellectuals to explore African-American music as resistance and the African-American resistance in music.

Guests include musicologist Harald Kisiedu, artist Satch Hoyt, cellist Eurico Ferreira Mathias and electronic musician Sky Deep. They deal with questions of positioning and reinvention, from funkiness and well-being to afro-futuristic utopias, or even direct attacks – raging against the machine. While discussions are held and new perspectives negotiated, the musicians Marlon Browden, Infinite Livez and Daryl Taylor join in for a spontaneous jam: the spoken word becomes vibration, the intellectual becomes spiritual, and the tangible-concrete becomes abstract. At the center of all these reflections and sound experimentations stands Afro-American culture, which has influenced resistance movements worldwide.

The interplay between words and the use of tones, between beats and noises, is understood as music. This assembly, this town hall meeting, reflects the polyphony of culture gathered in the hall; it takes in the observations from the audience with the goal: making it a true polyphonic happening!
