New texts and voices for the theatre: In the autumn of 2020 writers of Colour and Black authors came together at Ballhaus Naunynstraße. It was a meeting in which they got to know each other and which became the start of a shared journey: a writing workshop over eight months. The assignment: to explore and develop the possibilities of post-migrant theatre texts.
Every two weeks there was a meeting in which experiences were exchanged, ideas pitched, roles created, they read together, criticised, imagined the audience, dared and once again roles and storylines were conceptualised. Since the post-migrant cultural production has history, the linguist Kofi Yakpo, the author Deniz Utlu, the sociologist Onur Suzan Nobrega, the creative artist Philippa Ebéné, the film and theatre director Jasco Viefhues gave suggestions: They described their encounters with companions and fellow campaigners, their disputes over hindrances, funds and the public, as well as their experiences of freedom in creation.
We need literature that mirrors our experience and that makes contemplation possible. Theatre needs literature that stages current society. We need post-migrant reflections and theatre models. We need a diverse abundance of the post-migrant landscape, for a new theatre setting. Unconventional Signs – neue postmigrantische Theatertexte as a writing workshop is unique in this country.
